I purchased this bike rack to carry our two bikes on a long road trip and back (750 miles each way). We mounted the rack on my 2007 Honda Civic, tightened the straps, mounted the bikes, re-tightened the straps, and then used the excess mounting strap to secure the wheels. The bikes were securely fastened, and the straps did not loosen at all, even though we were traveling at highway speeds almost the entire way in each direction (70-80 mph). I checked them a few times while we were traveling, but it was eventually clear that they were not going to fall. The only caution I would give is that care must be taken to avoid wrapping the extra straps in such a way that there is no contact with the frame except for the middle strap provided for this purpose - wrapping the loose end of the mounting strap around the back tire mount caused the finish to rub away on my bike at the point of contact.
Overall, a great buy that I would highly recommend for long haul travels. Mounting the unit takes about 10 minutes the first time until you get it properly set, but it then locks into place so it only takes a few minutes on subsequent mounts.
